The March of the States

At the risk of For the precise purpose of tooting my own horn, I wanted to call attention to a new piece I have out with Al Jazeera America. (This is the first of hopefully many op/eds with them.) The piece charts the development of two recent phenomena in state politics: 1) the increasing number of state governments under unified party control, and 2) the increasing partisan polarization in state legislatures. This combination means that we're seeing a lot of legislative activity at the state level lately, and that activity is increasingly serving a particular partisan agenda. The public often complains about gridlock in Washington, but the states are showing us rapid productivity, and reminding us that stalemates aren't always the worst outcome.
